Milsom School of Music

The Milsom School of Music was founded in 2006, merging the teaching practices of partners David Milsom (violin, viola) and Ruth Milsom (piano, aural, theory). David and Ruth now have a combined half century+ of experience in individual and group tuition, ensemble playing and accompanying. Together with Associate teachers, they actively encourage pupils to pursue a broad and varied musical education.

One-to-one lessons are the cornerstone of our teaching. We pay close attention to the individual student, and our teaching delivery is highly tailored to suit each individual's pace and style of learning.

A recent development in David’s practice has been to provide extended opportunities for gifted young learners. To date this has taken the form of moving beyond the confines of an individual lesson to a project-based way of working with several students, one of whom, in 2024, made a research-based professional recording with David, and also has been involved in ensemble leading (including in professional contexts) and numerous other practical portfolio-based performing situations. This is a relevant and modern world ‘apprenticeship’ model in action, in which David’s long and broad experience is harnessed to support and nurture serious young learners.

For more ‘recreational learners’ (who are very welcome!) other opportunities are provided to enhance and encourage a real joy and enthusiasm for music making. Milsom School of Music seeks to provide a supportive and positive place for music learners of all ages and stages to grow their skills, educate themselves, and help to be part of a solution to current challenges in the performance and appreciation of western art-music in the UK.
